Where Are Portable Energy Storage Devices Generally Used?

Portable energy storage belongs to the sub-branch of electrochemical energy storage, and the product has rapidly matured. In the field of electrochemical energy storage technology, lithium-ion batteries are widely used in large, medium, and small-scale energy storage systems due to their small size, high density, large capacity, high specific energy, fast and stable charging and discharging, and long cycle life. Portable energy storage is another innovative initiative of lithium-ion batteries in the energy storage field, which is safe, convenient, clean and low-carbon, accurately matches the consumer pain point of electricity demand, and is compatible with almost all commonly used electronic and electrical devices. Since 2018, the industry usage has continued to explode, with a doubling trend of high growth.

Applications of portable energy storage

Portable energy storage is mainly distributed in outdoor activities and emergency preparedness due to its convenience of carrying and far greater capacity than ordinary power banks. Specifically,

Outdoor scenarios:

Providing power for digital products, small household appliances and other equipment such as speakers, mobile phones, computers, projectors, cameras, as well as fans, car refrigerators, drones and other equipment during self-driving tours and outdoor camping, and can also be applied to outdoor operations and exploration and detection. The power source can be sustained for 2 to 3 days when the battery level is above 1 degree and the power output is small or medium, solving the pain point of short-term electricity use. Currently, the demand for outdoor applications of portable energy storage is the highest due to the high enthusiasm for outdoor activities and the upgrading of digital home appliances, typical of which is the US market, with its total demand in 2020 accounting for 47.3% of the global demand.

Emergency scenarios:

Such as indoor power outage emergencies, indoor party power supply, small-scale rescue and relief, etc. Japan is prone to disasters, and the public awareness of emergency preparedness is strong. Its total demand in 2020 accounts for 29.6% of the global demand. The Chinese consumer market is quickly taking off around 2021, mainly because of the gradual popularization of outdoor activity culture and the use of backup power by some households.

The extension of portable energy storage applications

The epidemic has catalyzed the release of products, and the dual scenarios of outdoor and emergency benefit: On the one hand, under the normalization of epidemic prevention and control, the global enthusiasm for outdoor sports is high, and outdoor power sources have become the mainstream for short-term electricity use during family self-driving tours, small-scale picnics, camping, photography, fishing, and other outdoor consumption upgrades. On the other hand, uncertain factors such as the epidemic and power outages have pushed up the demand for backup in emergency scenarios, and the usage of portable energy storage at home has increased.

Portable energy storage has extended to household energy storage, and the product has some substitutability. Overseas demand for household energy storage is increasing. Household energy storage refers to large-scale household energy storage devices with a battery level of more than 3 degrees. Family energy storage has evolved from the initial diesel generator to solve the scenario of emergency electricity use in the household, and now gradually develops into a storage and energy use system dominated by lithium-ion batteries, paired with solar panels for self-generation, storage and self-use, applied to off-grid family self-generation, storage and peak-valley electricity price arbitrage.
